RECOGNITION AWARD CATEGORIES

GOLD MEDAL AWARD

This is the highest honor that AIA Michigan can bestow upon a member and no more than one will be granted a year. The award is made in recognition of notable contributions to AIA Michigan. Participation from National AIA or one of its components will be considered. This award highlights outstanding achievement in one or more areas of professional endeavor. The AIA Michigan Gold Medal may be awarded posthumously.

ROBERT F. HASTINGS AWARD

Named in honor of the late Robert F. Hastings, FAIA, Past President of AIA and the first recipient of the Institute's Kemper Award. The Hastings Award may be given each year in recognition of a specific significant effort and contribution to AIA Michigan. Current members of the AIA Michigan Board of Directors are not eligible for the award. The Hastings Award may be awarded posthumously.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of the built environment by influential architects who practice in education or corporate environments such as Healthcare, Manufacturing, Government, Facilities, etc. Outstanding contribution(s) does not include those while in traditional architectural practice. Nominees must be members of AIA Michigan and should demonstrate dedication to the mission of AIA Michigan, significant contributions to the profession and service to the community. No more than one award will be granted within a year

YOUNG ARCHITECT AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize proficiency and exceptional contributions to the profession by licensed architects early in their career. Nominees must be members of AIA Michigan for a minimum of three years and fewer than 10 years during the calendar year of the award. They should demonstrate exceptional accomplishment in the profession, dedication to the mission of AIA Michigan, contributions to the profession and service to the community. Applicants shall show active participation in AIA Michigan and or one of its components. More than one award may be given at the discretion of the jury.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER AWARD

To recognize proficiency and exceptional accomplishments in, and contributions to the profession by an associate who has been a member of AIAMI for a minimum of two years.

HONORARY AFFILIATE MEMBER AWARD

A person of esteemed character who is not otherwise eligible for AIA membership in AIA Michigan but who has rendered a distinguished service to the profession of architecture or to the arts and sciences allied therewith may be admitted to membership, as an honorary affiliate member of AIA Michigan.


FIRM AWARD

The AIA Michigan Architecture Firm Award may be awarded to a firm which has consistently produced distinguished architecture, advances in environmental sustainability, and progressed equity in the profession— for a period of no less than 10 years. Any AIA Michigan member, group of members, chapter or committee may nominate eligible firms. Firms practicing under the leadership of either a single principal or several principals who satisfy section 2010(1) of the state licensing act are eligible for the Architecture Firm Award. In addition, firms that have been reorganized and whose name and practice has been significantly changed and modified (by merger or acquisition with a new focus, practice areas, offices, etc.) , are also eligible, as long as the “new ‘firm’” has been in operation as this entity  for a period of at least 10 years. The AIA Michigan Honor Award and Recognition Committee will focus its evaluation on the quality of the firm's architecture, environmental sustainability, and equitable professionalism — not on the makeup of the principals of the firm.

AXP FIRM AWARD

AIA Michigan AXP Outstanding Firm Award may be awarded to a firm(s) of any size for exemplary commitment and contributions to interns in their development as professionals. The criteria for selection will be based upon those firms who give exemplary support to design professionals pursuing licensure by providing comprehensive training opportunities, promoting membership, and participating as AXP advisors, and encouraging supplementary education activities. Nominations may be made by AXP state coordinators, local AXP coordinators, AXP educator coordinators, students and interns participating in AXP, registered architects, or AIA components.

BALTHAZAR KORAB AWARD

This award is named in honor of Balthazar Korab, architect, and photographer, who spent his career breathing life into architecture and the built environment. This Award is given in recognition of an individual’s significant effort and contribution to Architecture and/or the Arts.
