AIAMI UPDATE

The AIA Michigan and it’s Chapters are busier than ever! The past few months AIA Michigan and MAF have had four major conferences: Mid Summer, Design Conference, Municipal & Educational Facilities. The Municipal Conference on September 19 was the first municipal conference for AIAMI. This event was held at the Warren City Hall designed by Neumann/Smith. At the end of September we had representatives at the Large State Meeting in Miami and at the AIA National Design Conference in Minneapolis. The Government Affairs committee continues to monitor the tax on services. AIA Detroit and AIA Michigan hosted the AIA National Convention Site Selection Committee for 2017 in Detroit. SOLOSO

SOLOSO Is Here! http://soloso.aia.org/eKnowledge

Become part of the premier knowledge resource custom built for architects. On September 25, the AIA launched http://soloso.aia.org/eKnowledge, the Institute’s new online resource connecting members to a continuous flow of information on trends, solutions, products, and strategies related to architecture. Soloso is a Web 2.0 site designed to facilitate knowledge-sharing and idea exchange among architects. AIA members have full access to all that Soloso offers. They can search its ever-expanding content and add to it by creating a professional profile and uploading projects, thus connecting with other AIA members and the architecture community at large to build a professional network that has the potential to help the entire architecture community grow.

The American Institute of Architects has updated AIA Contract Documents—the most widely accepted and understood contract agreements in the industry.

The AIA has formally launched the 2007 Update to AIA Contract Documents, 40 revised, new or renumbered, documents and commentaries. The major changes you’ll see in the 2007 Update include: In Owner/Contract agreements that incorporate A201-2007, the Owner and Contractor now have the option to engage an Initial Decision Maker to make initial decisions on claims. This option responds to owner and contractor groups who questioned the Architect’s impartiality and requested an alternative to the architect’s involvement in the resolution of claims. Agreements now allow the consolidation of arbitrations, a concept lobbied for by owners and contractors to allow economical resolution of claims involving multiple parties. Arbitration is now optional in both Owner/Contractor and Owner/Architect agreements, a provision that responds to changing views about the merits of mandatory arbitration. State law now governs the statute of limitations for filing claims in both Owner/Architect and Owner/Contractor agreements, subject to a 10 year cut-off following Substantial Completion. For a comprehensive explanation of these and other changes, please visit www.aiacontractdocuments.org. To order these forms please visit www.aiami.com

Excerpts from Crain’s Detroit Business:

When Albert Kahn designed the 2.2-million-square-foot Russell Industrial Center in 1915, he  probably didn't foresee the Metropolitan Architecture Practice filling a small corner of the space with computers and design plans. Roger Berent, AIA and Kyle Hulewat started their firm in one of the many low-cost, low-frills spaces available in the center. They're part of the community of  artists, jewelers and others who fill the building once used for manufacturing. “We wanted a loft-style office,” Berent said. “The way it looked, the lease rates and the community here made it  ideal.” ... Matthew Rossetti, AIA, president, Southfield-based Rossetti Associates. Taking a drive  throughout metro Detroit, it's easy to spot the accomplishments of Rossetti Associates: the  Compuware Building in Detroit, Ford Field and The Palace of Auburn Hills. During the past year,  the firm has kept momentum going with projects sure to draw attention once completed. Rossetti Associates is designing Pavilions of Troy, a 535,000-square-foot mixed-use project planned on  the former Kmart headquarters property. In addition, the firm is designing Belmar Development  Group L.L.C.'s @water (Atwater) Lofts. Rossetti Associates also is the master architect for the  Greektown Casino and Hotel, a three-block project in Detroit. Rossetti has embraced the idea of  mixed-use developments as something to personally promote, bringing the vision of the projects  to clients ... Vegas in the D: Local architects collaborate on MGM Grand - The two lead architects  on the job — Paul Tonti, AIA vice president with SmithGroup of Detroit and Thomas Sherry, AIA, design principal with Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates - explained the ideas behind the design of the building, the mechanics of their joint venture and the challenges of the project - visit http://www.crainsdetroit.com/apps/pbcs.dll/search?Category=SEARCH for the full article ... Hobbs+Black Associates, Inc. is pleased to announce the recent to the firm’s Ann Arbor  architectural staff, including the following: Jonathan Botorowicz returns to Hobbs+Black as an  Associate, Karin Deam-Mengozzi, RA, joins Hobbs+Black as a Project Architect, Diane McIntyre, AIA, is a Project Architect, Aaron Pilat, RA, NCARB-Certified, joins as a Project Architect.

When AIA Contract Documents are in force, everyone's interests are in balance. Based on the widely-accepted Microsoft® Word platform, and updated in November 2006, the entirely redesigned AIA Contract Documents software (for Windows OS) lets you create, share, and manage documents with ease.

Even the popular AIA Contract Administration and Project Management Forms, the G Forms, can be completed in Word, making it easy for the project team to collaborate at the construction site or wherever they’re located. Given the complexity of today’s design and construction projects, shouldn’t you be using the best contract document tool available?
