PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Summer in the City…and in the Country

Following our traditionally quiet June and July summer months hiatus, activity at the State Component level has picked up once again. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island played host recently to the 64th Annual AIA Michigan Mid-Summer Conference held in partnership again this year with AGC of Michigan. As we've come to expect, the weather was great, the attendance was equal to last year, we were graciously sponsored by a wide-ranging group of industry supporters, and we enjoyed some of our best educational programs yet.

Michigan's "First Gentleman," Dan Mulhern, along with his son, delivered a lively and inspirational presentation on Everyday Leadership. It was great. He treated the attendees to a book signing afterwards as well. On Saturday, McGraw-Hill Construction President, Norbert Young, FAIA, spoke to a packed house about the Global Construction Market Outlook - and we all left feeling a little better. Capping off the lectures, Balthazar Korab delivered a historic photographic look at 150 Buildings Across the US, to a standing room crowd. AIA Michigan surprised Balthazar with a special "Life Achievement Award," that left him speechless for the first time ever.

Keeping in the AIA150 spirit, we handed out twenty framed AIA150 Certificates to major sponsors and honored guests. Included were our recognition of the Michigan Architectural Foundation's 50th Anniversary, and our recognition of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada on the occasion of their 100th Anniversary.

As usual, golf and bocce, along with Texas Hold'em and bingo, and lots of great food and drink, kept the attendees well-entertained throughout the event. Thanks again to the Conference Chair and Co-Chair, Gary Skog, FAIA and Bob Daverman, AIA, along with the entire Mid-Summer Conference Committee for a job well done.

At the Annual Business Meeting held during the Conference, the following slate of 2008 AIA Michigan Executive Committee Members was announced:

Past-president

Dennis King, FAIA

President

Steve Smith, AIA

Vice-president / President-elect

Ron Campbell, AIA

Treasurer

Alan Cobb, FAIA

Secretary

Doug Kueffner, AIA

Executive Director

Rae Dumke, Honorary AIA

Regional Director

Fred Butters, FAIA, Esq.

Congratulations to Fred Butters on his election by acclamation for a three-year term as our Michigan Regional Director. Fred will be a candidate-in-training for the next several months as Celeste Novak finishes her term as our representative to National.

Most importantly, we give our thanks again to Ron Hausmann, PE, Chairman of AGC of Michigan, for that organization's continuing support and cooperation as a part of our annual Grand Hotel retreat. We hope to share the summer with them next year again.

Looking Ahead to Fall

Up next is another annual favorite, the Design Retreat at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake. September 7-8 are the dates and this year's program will be the best ever. In celebration of AIA150, the registration fee has been lowered to $150 for Members and just $50 for Students and Associates. With many more "young" people in attendance, a new energy level should be palpable.

And, don't miss the inaugural AIA Michigan Municipal Facilities Conference in Warren on September 19. This new annual conference will be held at the recently completed Warren City Hall and should include a vigorous discussion of a broad range of facility types. Sign up now, because this event will surely be sold out.

Looking ahead, remember that on October 7, AIA Detroit will have an always exciting House Tour in trendy Royal Oak, and on October 11-12, we'll all be hosted at the Grand Traverse Resort for the always exciting MAF Educational Facilities Conference. In November, plan on attending the AIA Detroit Honor Awards at the DAC as we close out our year of AIA150 celebrations.

There's much more too. Check in with our local AIA Chapters around the State for additional AIA150 events and other educational and valuable activities in your area. Who knew that AIA150 would be such a busy year?

AIA MICHIGAN DESIGN RETREAT

Don’t miss the opportunity to attend the AIA Michigan Design Retreat. This retreat provides you with the opportunity to talk about architectural design with your peers. We try to expose you to a wide variety of ideas and attitudes about architecture and the design process in an informal (read: rustic) atmosphere. This is a chance to see how the problems of design are handled by fellow members of the profession. Forget about the mundane problems in the office and think about design, design, and more design. When was the last time you were offered the chance to spend time talking and thinking about what we all went to school for? Imagine it. . . fun in the woods thinking about architecture!

Interns, students and non-AIA members are welcome and invited to attend! (Check out the package rate for students....WOW!) You can also charge the registration fee!

Saturday evening presenter: John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press Architecture Writer on 150 Significant Achievements in Michigan Architecture.

When AIA Contract Documents are in force, everyone's interests are in balance. Based on the widely-accepted Microsoft® Word platform, and updated in November 2006, the entirely redesigned AIA Contract Documents software (for Windows OS) lets you create, share, and manage documents with ease.

Even the popular AIA Contract Administration and Project Management Forms, the G Forms, can be completed in Word, making it easy for the project team to collaborate at the construction site or wherever they’re located. Given the complexity of today’s design and construction projects, shouldn’t you be using the best contract document tool available?
