PRESIDENT'S REPORT

An Inspiring National Gathering

Our National AIA Convention in San Antonio turned out to be a pretty inspirational experience. Sure, the River Walk was a fun and terrific way to get around, and the AIA San Antonio Host Chapter Party held at La Villita was a pretty good one. But this Convention had a special and more important atmosphere about it. It had a triple-threat theme going for it.

The advertised theme, "Growing Beyond Green," lived up to its billing. Setting the tone was the opening keynote presentation by noted scientist, author and TV personality, David Suzuki, PhD. His focus on the importance of a sustainable lifestyle was humbling to say the least. Then, the Convention closed with a standing-room only wrap-up by the Honorable Al Gore, complete with a book-signing before hand. The Vice-President challenged the design profession to take the lead in sustainability, as the key professionals who will have the greatest impact on our environment. It was a great presentation that left us architects feeling really great about what we do.

The exhibit floor was overflowing with exhibitors whose focus was clearly on "green" products. Seminar after seminar emphasized the importance of, and applications for, sustainable design. If you couldn't find tantalizing information, you weren't looking around.

Secondly, a palpable theme also existed focused on the changing world of Integrated Design. Understanding the current state of BIM and how our profession is evolving before our eyes was another area of interest for the attendees. Replete with software demonstrations and overviews of the new contract documents, the Convention offered an excellent opportunity to measure your progress and chart your future in the way we practice.

Lastly, the Convention's much-anticipated focus on our Sesquicentennial AIA150, lived up to its promise. Complete with huge convention floor displays celebrating the 150 buildings of "Americas' Favorite Architecture," and a real celebration of the AIA150 Champions from around the Country, this year's gathering did an outstanding job of making us feel good about our birthday celebration year.

Next year, we're on to Boston in mid-May for the 2008 National Convention. If I were you, I'd put it on my calendar right now. Our profession is going through some dramatic changes, and this annual gathering has once again become a critical and meaningful and valuable opportunity to keep abreast of the changing landscape. You won't be disappointed.

INTRODUCING THE NEW 2007 AIA DIGITAL PRACTICE DOCUMENTS

The digital age allows for the rapid dissemination of information, including project correspondence and other documents such as the Architect’s Instruments of Service. This ease of dissemination, and the potential for easy document alteration, has lead to concerns about protection of intellectual property rights and liability for the subsequent misuse of transmitted data. To address those concerns, the AIA published two new documents, C106™– 2007, Digital Data Licensing Agreement, and E201™– 2007, Digital Data Protocol Exhibit. These new documents address ownership rights and allow project participants to establish protocols for the transmission of digital data. See

CANDID REFLECTIONS: Letters from Women Architects, 1970 & 2000

$24.00 - available from www.midmarchartspress.org

In the process of researching her first book on the history of women in architecture, Doris Cole sent out an inquiry letter in 1972 to women architects throughout the country. These personal letters are transcribed, edited, and included in this book. They chronicle careers that spanned from the turn of the twentieth century through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and into the 1970s. Additionally, observations were obtained in 2004 from contemporary women in architecture in order to learn about developments over the subsequent thirty years.

When AIA Contract Documents are in force, everyone's interests are in balance. Based on the widely-accepted Microsoft® Word platform, and updated in November 2006, the entirely redesigned AIA Contract Documents software (for Windows OS) lets you create, share, and manage documents with ease.

Even the popular AIA Contract Administration and Project Management Forms, the G Forms, can be completed in Word, making it easy for the project team to collaborate at the construction site or wherever they’re located. Given the complexity of today’s design and construction projects, shouldn’t you be using the best contract document tool available?
