AIA Michigan E-NEWS

MESSAGE FROM AIAMI PRESIDENT

Dennis M. King, FAIA
President AIA Michigan
PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Welcome to AIA150! Thanks to a lot of planning and dedication by a broad cross-section of our membership, our AIA sesquicentennial celebration is off and running strong. We "kicked-off" the year at our Annual Leadership Conference held at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. With enthusiastic attendees, and lots of AIA150 pins, hats, and banners, we had a terrific start for the year. Included at the Leadership Retreat was the President's Convocation for AIA Michigan Regional Director Nominations. Our current Regional Director, Celeste Novak, AIA, will complete her three-year term at the end of 2007. A single candidate was nominated by the Chapter Presidents - Frederick F. Butlers, Esq., FAIA. Fred will be visiting interested Chapters in the coming months to meet with the membership.

Also in January, our AIA Michigan Committee on the Environment (COTE) was re-activated by Charlie Poat, AIA, and Mike Decoster, AIA. They are seeking interested committee members. Let Rae Dumke know if you are interested in joining our Michigan COTE efforts.

Several of our AIA Michigan representatives braved the winter weather and participated at the AIA National Grassroots Conference in Washington, DC. It looks as though 2007 will be an active political and legislative year on the National scene as well as here in Michigan. To that end, our AIA Michigan Government Affairs Committee has planned one of the most important Legislative Days in history on March 20 in Lansing. We expect to gather 150 architects that day to help introduce our AIA agenda here in Michigan. Please plan to join us and our engineering colleagues that afternoon. It is crucial that we make a very strong showing for the "new" legislature in Lansing.

Coming up in April is our BIG AIA150 Michigan event for the year. The Annual Honor Awards Gala on Friday, April 20, will be our official AIA150 Celebration Event for the year. Held at the new Inn at St. John's in Plymouth, we'll have a fantastic group of design award winners and recognitions recipients to celebrate. Regardless of whether you're an award designee, we encourage our entire membership to help us observe AIA150. Stay overnight at the Inn at St. John's and then attend our special Saturday morning Design Brunch. Featuring a special presentation by Chicago Jury Chair and Millennium Park Design Director, Edward Uhlir, FAIA, you'll learn about "The Millennium Park Effect" from the person who served at the "point" of this significant park development.

Speaking of AIA150, we're making our mark. AIA Michigan ranks fourth nationally, behind only California, Texas and New York in the number of successful AIA150 Grants received for our "Blueprint for America" initiatives. Congratulations to AIA Upper Peninsula, AIA Southwest Michigan, AIA Grand Valley, AIA Huron Valley, AIA Flint, AIA Detroit, and AIA Michigan for their winning applications and efforts. Thanks also to our team of AIA150 Champions chaired by Gene Hopkins, FAIA, for fostering the enthusiasm and energy to create these important initiatives.

I hope to see you ALL in Lansing on March 20!

AIA 150 UPDATE

AIA 150 MICHIGAN SOCIETY INITIATIVES

Kristen Berry, Marx Layne

The Michigan chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are each hard at work on their initiatives for the AIA 150 Blueprint for America program. Each chapter has developed and is in the process of implementing a targeted initiative to address the architectural and design needs of their individual communities, and those of the region.

AIA Michigan - Designing for Michigan's Future

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of AIA, AIA Michigan will create a handbook to preserve Michigan AIA150 Initiatives, titled, Designing for Michigan's Future: A Blueprint for Creating Healthy, Safe, Livable, and Sustainable Communities. The handbook will offer examples of how the AIA's "10 Principles for Livable Communities" have been utilized across the state. The concept of the handbook will be introduced at March Legislative Day 2007; the finished product will be presented at March Legislative Day 2008.

AIA Detroit - Neighborhoods by Design

AIA Detroit's "Neighborhoods by Design" initiative was designed to bring area citizens, community and business leaders, architecture students and government officials together to find ways to update and strengthen local neighborhoods, creating places where people want to live, work and play.

The program is comprised of three related forums to discuss and address neighborhood sustainability issues and engage residents and stakeholders from each community. An issues forum was held in January 2007 at Lawrence Technological University to identify the specific and most common issues among the communities and begin the conversation about how to create solutions. A three-day charrette was then held in February 2007 at University of Detroit Mercy, during which the students worked together with architecture and design professionals to develop feasible solutions to these issues. A third forum will take place March 23, 2007 to reconvene the participants to discuss the solutions and present them to the communities.

AIA Detroit will then gather and compile the results into a booklet to summarize the initiative and serve as a set of guidelines, complete with additional resources for creating neighborhood sustainability, which will be distributed to all interested communities throughout southeastern Michigan.

AIA Flint - AIA Flint Partnership for Community Service

The AIA Flint Partnership for Community Service is an initiative to produce a cooperative master plan for the Whaley Children's Center and the surrounding neighborhood, including a prototype building that can be constructed at a low cost by volunteer labor and fulfill similar housing needs elsewhere. The residents of the center require 24-hour supervision and therapeutic services in a residential setting. The current center is too small and the surrounding community suffers from myriad socioeconomic challenges.

The initiative began with a bus tour and discussion in November 2006, in which area leaders and residents discussed their thoughts and concerns regarding Flint neighborhoods. A master planning charrette was held in February 2007 based upon the findings of the bus tour. A solutions charrette will be held in March 2007, followed by a presentation of the final project in April 2007.

AIA Grand Valley - West Michigan Regional Urban Design Charrettes

AIA Grand Valley, in partnership with the West Michigan Strategic Alliance, produced the West Michigan Regional Design Charrette. This partnership will again co-host 45 multi-jurisdictional charrettes.

AIA Huron Valley - Ann Arbor Livability 101

AIA Huron Valley will hold a number of informative and educational seminars to promote the AIA's 10 Principles for Livable Communities. The chapter will also create a booklet that will provide developers and the community with the tools necessary to understand and incorporate the livability concepts that are fundamental to a sustainable Ann Arbor.

AIA Southwest Michigan - Continue the Momentum & Solidify the Vision

AIA Southwest Michigan's "Continue the Momentum & Solidify the Vision - A Community Design Charrette for the City of Albion, Michigan" will lay a foundation for discussion based on the Principles for Livable Communities. The charrette process will also aim to construct a decisions filter for the community to use in the future. At the conclusion of the charrette, a summary slide presentation will be given as a gift to the community. The program will begin on April 24, 2007 with an evening community meeting, followed by a three-day charrette April 26 through 28, 2007.

AIA Upper Peninsula - U.P. Design Assistance Team

AIA Upper Peninsula has made a minimum five-year commitment to provide at least five area communities with design assistance for a recognized community need. AIA Upper Peninsula architects will engage local government officials and fellow citizens to collaborate on a community service program that addresses an area community's distinct need with a goal of producing a shared vision for a more livable future.

An application and selection process has been established to choose on community to work with each year. Following selection, a team of architects, together with a community of area stakeholders, will prepare for and conduct a two-day design charrette to propose a solution to their design challenge. The first cycle will begin in Spring 2007, with the Manistique Waterfront Utilization Plan.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Jeff Zokas, AIA, Chair

This past fall a committee was established to re-energize AIA membership statewide. Sub-committees have been established to explore ideas on how we can attract future members (students), attract and retain associate level, licensed architects and affiliate members. There are so many good ideas the sub-committees have become over whelmed on how to implement.

WE NEED A FEW GOOD MEN AND WOMEN TO HELP OUT!

As you may already know, AIAM like so many other professional organizations throughout the nation have a baby boomer bubble about to burst in terms of retirements. We need to start thinking right now how we can minimize that loss and maintain the vibrant organization that so many people have helped to build over the years. The world is changing quickly around us, the younger generation of architects is looking for different ways to get involved and participate within the organization. They are looking for more targeted programs that interest them. We need to carefully look at all of our programs/activities and determine if they are really focused on the full spectrum of membership. Should we be providing a more diverse group of program/networking activities that truly interest associate, architect and affiliate members? Can this happen at a chapter level only or does it need help at the state level? We don't have all the answers, that is why we need your help!

PLEASE SIGN UP NOW!

The committee currently has 10 active members and we need considerably more to help implement these ideas. Please contact Rae Dumke at AIAM (313-965-4100) or Jeff Zokas, AIA at (248-262-1868).

REGIONAL DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS

Nominee
Fred Butters, FAIA
Election of a Regional Director will occur this summer at the annual meeting of AIA Michigan on August 10, 2007.

Regional Director Nominations – During the Presidents’ Convocation at our Leadership Retreat in January one person was officially nominated for the position of Regional Director. Fred Butters, FAIA from Detroit was nominated by the AIA Detroit and endorsed by the AIA Grand Valley Chapter. Current Regional Director Celeste Allen Novak’s term will expire in 2007.

Besides being a member of the National board, the Regional Director becomes a member of the AIA Michigan Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Regional Director duties include attending National board meetings, promoting the issues of AIAM at those board meetings, serving on committees of the AIA National board, reporting on the proceedings to the AIAM board, and visiting local chapters.

The Regional Director also attends two meetings per year chaired by the AIAM president involving all chapter presidents. The term of office for Regional Director is three years.

Additional nominations may be made by petition containing signatures of 10 members, or by resolution of any chapter or its executive committee before June 1st. Please contact Rae Dumke at AIAMI.

All nominees will have their photos, qualifications and platform published in a society publication prior to the end of June. If more than one candidate, direct mail ballots will be provided and must be received back to AIAM by July 1, 2007 to allow announcement of the result at the Mid-Summer Conference.

Local chapters may wish to provide nominees a forum to present their platforms at a regular membership meeting; and AIA Michigan policy requires that all nominees must be allowed to present at the same meeting. Questions will be formulated by the ExCom for each candidate to answer in a future issue of the newsletter.
