1. MESSAGE FROM AIAMI PRESIDENT JEFFREY HAUSMAN, AIA

Spring 2006 and the year is
well underway. On the first day of spring (March 21), 57 architects met
in Lansing during our 11th annual legislative day. We were greeted by
Senator Mark Schauer who congratulated us on being active participants
in the democratic process. He noted that our legislators appreciate when
we take the time to make our voices heard. I had the privilege to be
introduced by Representative Chris Ward along with the presidents of
ACEC, Dan Fredendall and MSPE, Barry Buschmann, PE at the opening of the
House session for the day. Our small legion of members along with our
friends the engineers made a big impression on our legislators. We have
secured sponsors for two bills the Certificate of Merit and the
Increased Penalties bills. The Certificate of Merit would require a
plaintiff to get a licensed architect to certify that a case had merit
before it could be prosecuted. The Increased Penalties bill would
increase the penalty for unlicensed practice to a felony. This would
encourage local prosecutors to pursue unlicensed practice because they
could retain the judgments in the cases. Our goal for 2007 is to triple
our number again. We want at least 150 AIA members to descend on Lansing
next March to push our agenda forward. Make a point of attending our
legislative day next year during the 150th anniversary of the AIA.
As Margaret Mead once said "Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the
only thing that ever has."
Next on our agenda for the year is the annual Honor Awards and
Recognition celebration. This year it will being held on Friday, May
12th at the Horace H. Rackham Building on the campus of the University
of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
We will be honoring Carl D. Roehling, FAIA as the Gold Medalist
for 2006.
Rocco Romano, AIA is being awarded the Hastings Award.
Jim Chaffers, AIA will be honored as the President's award
winner.
The firm of the year is Integrated Architecture, out of Grand
Rapids and Ann Arbor.
John Paul Minear, AIA is the Young Architect of the Year.
Senator Mark Schauer is the Legislator of the Year
And our Honorary Affiliate for 2006 for her Cool Cities Initiative is
the Honorable Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.
We will also be presenting 14 projects with AIA Michigan Honor Awards.
In addition we will be recognizing the State's two newest fellows of the
American Institute of Architects, Frederick Butters, FAIA and
Alan Cobb, FAIA.
It promises to be a great evening. Plan to attend and celebrate great
architecture, architects and individuals that have contributed to
designing a better Michigan through their conviction that design
matters. You will be amazed at how the individuals that we are honoring
have made a positive impact on us, our communities, state, nation and
world.
In closing, please let me know if you have suggestions for how we can
serve you better as a member. One of our goals is to continue to improve
our services to our members.
I am continuing to work to make it a great 2006.

A NEW TAX BREAK FOR
ARCHITECTS
On
October 11, 2004, the U.S. Senate passed the "JOBS" tax bill, which
includes a $358 million tax cut on architectural and engineering
services performed in the U.S. for construction projects by sole
proprietors, partnerships, LLCs, subchapter S corporations, and C
corporations.
How This Works for You: Qualifying architects can deduct 3% of their
net revenues from projects in the U.S. for tax years 2005 and 2006. The
deduction increases to 6% for tax years 2007, 2006, and 2009, and then
to 9% after 2009. Because the JOBS legislation was focused on creating
incentives to increase employment, the deduction is limited to 50% of
the amount of W-2 salaries paid out by the taxpayer. As with many tax
matters, the provision is complex and has several limitations on its
use. Architects and their accountants are encouraged to review this
brief guide when preparing returns.
