In the news this week:
1. Message from AIAM President Celeste Novak A lot has been happening with Michigan architects these past few months! AIA Michigan met to celebrate the art of architecture and great design by Michigan architects on Friday, May 2, at Cranbrook. Many of the awards reflect a new response by our architects toward sustainable design. I encourage all of you to learn more about these great projects at the Design Retreat this fall. We also celebrated the Fellowship induction of Michigan architect Andy Vazzano, FAIA, during the National AIA convention in San Diego. Many of our members attended the convention. Later this year, I will have an opportunity to meet with presidents from other state societies to share programs and concerns on public policy, community outreach, communications and engaging associates. On the home front, we’re continuing to conduct a break out session at each board meeting to discuss topics generated at the Leadership Retreat in January. Your ideas and concerns are vital – so please contact your AIA Michigan board representatives to share your thoughts. Last month, we focused on Livable Communities. The discussion resulted in the formation of a task force to create a Livable Communities/Green/Sustainable (get the picture, still to be named) Committee. In June, we’ll address membership – membership drives, membership services and satisfaction, membership goals. You name it and we will talk about it. In August at Mackinac, we will focus on Government Affairs. Earlier this year, many members met with legislators either in Washington, DC or at the “Howling” (our legislative day in Lansing). These sessions provide members a chance to introduce our legislators to issues we think are important, such as QBS, interior design practice acts, transportation funding, and school contracts. When members went to DC, Senator Carl Levin asked for AIAMI’s support for the new Brownfields Legislation. Senator Debbie Stabenaw also affirmed her support of national legislation for livable communities and QBS. Each chapter is continuing to create opportunities to meet with legislators, and through APAC, provide fundraisers for their local representatives. Plus, the AIA Michigan will hold a fundraiser for Senator Debbie Stabenaw on Monday, September 15th at the SmithGroup Detroit offices, that I hope you can attend. It’s important for us all to support this influential senator who has four key Senate committee assignments including the powerful Budget Committee; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; and the Special Committee on Aging. I also encourage you to participate with the Governor's Land Use Task Force. Attend a fact-finding meeting in your community – the dates and locations are posted at www.michiganlanduse.org/events.htm. It’s vital for architects to share our visions for Michigan's growth. In addition, a small group of architects, including AIA Detroit President Steve Smith, was invited to meet with City of Detroit Buildings and Safety Engineering to review a new permit process. This meeting laid the foundation to build a partnership with the city in its efforts to encourage development. As you can see, there is a lot happening. Get involved! Send your comments! I look forward to your contributions to this year’s agendas. Hope to see you at Mackinac! 2. “Green” Dominates AIAMI Building Awards AIA Michigan presented its prestigious awards on May 2 to an outstanding group of buildings, many incorporating “green” building techniques. The winners include: · Ford Rouge Center Site Revitalization (ARCADIS) Twenty-five Year Awards recognize the enduring design and
continued functionality of two projects: The SmithGroup was named AIAM’s Firm of the Year. It is the oldest continuously practicing architectural firm in the country, celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. 3. Architects Recognized for Achievements, Contributions The Gold Medal – Eugene Hopkins, FAIA AIAMI - The attached
amendment to the Bylaws shall be submitted to the Membership for vote at the 2003
Annual Meeting. Calvin D. Lane, AIA, former managing principal at URS Corporate, is the recipient of AIA Grand Valley Lifetime Achievement Award. Lane was involved in numerous professional, community and business organizations throughout his career. His most important legacy, however, is one of mentor to many young architects and designers. 6. Impacting the Design Profession Through Continuing Education Those who believe that continuing education in
architecture means no more than meeting the AIA’s annual continuing education
requirement of 18 LU hours or minimum state mandatory continuing education (MCE)
requirements, should stop and refocus on what the AIA elected leadership
intended seven years ago when they implemented the AIA/CES. That is, reinforcing
the professional goal of life-long learning and developing a solid
organizational structure to support architects’ professional development.
