1. A Message from President Tim Casai The welcome change in the weather brings a season of activity to AIA Michigan. Since this is an e-newsletter and no one likes to read long articles on their computer, I will briefly outline events AIAMI currently has scheduled for our membership. We hope that you can join us. * May 3 features our AIAMI Honor Awards program at Cranbrook/Kingswood. Come celebrate good people, great architecture and excellent fellowship at a wonderful place. * May 9-11 brings the National Convention to Charlotte, N.C., at which we will turn out to elect our own Gene Hopkins, FAIA as the 2004 AIA President. Please attend if you can, and if you cannot, call an architect friend outside of Michigan and ask them to vote for Gene! Check the list below and the AIAMI website (aiami.com) for other events around the state and also in your home chapter. And speaking of the website, you can register for many of these events on-line on the AIAMI website. Architects often ask what AIA does for the individual member. My answer is nothing, unless you participate! See you there. Tim Casai, FAIA |

2. Government Affairs … Heads Up on Homebuilders Legislation In late March, the House Committee on Employment, Training and Safety passed HB 5819, which is the same as substitute H-1 to HB 4423; it was just reissued as a new bill (HB 5819), almost exactly one year later. It amends Article 20 as follows: change residence to residential building, change exemption from 3500 square feet to 5000 square feet, change calculated floor area definition from gross area to Habitable Space (living, sleeping, eating, cooking), same as the Michigan Residential Code, not including bathroom, toilet room, closet, hallway, storage, etc. The next steps for HB 5819 are a vote in the House, then the Senate, then the Governor's signature. The future of this Bill can be greatly impacted by the opposition architects express to their legislators. For more information, visit our website at http://www.aiami.com/house_bill_5819.htm Other Government Affairs News: AIAM, ACEC and MSPE held a successful legislative fundraiser in Flint at THA for the Democratic Senate Caucus. More than 50 members attended the March event. |
