1. Message from AIAMI President Andy Vazzano, AIA: A View from the Bridge
It was exciting to leave Mackinac Island at the conclusion of a successful Mid Summer Conference in August. We held our second Annual Business and Board meetings and still found great quality time for fellowship with members, guests and dialogue with Gordon Chong FAIA, AIA National First Vice President. As President-Elect, Gordon spoke on his vision of how the Institute needs to address its AIM initiatives in the near term by becoming more inclusive, less fragmented. He also seeks an expanded organization with regard to core services we provide to the client community.

He noted some interesting statistics: only 50 percent of recent graduates are entering traditional practice. And, of the remaining half, only 10 percent have pursued registration. Concurrently, there has been a 30 percent growth of our practice towards non-traditional services, both upstream and downstream. Some of this diversification has caused a desire towards specialization of interest groups within AIA, which may lead to fragmentation by size and area of practice. The profession may need to look to alternative career paths for architects who choose to be involved in the built environment, but not in traditional practice.

Looking forward, the Institute needs to be conversely more inclusive of other skills, that through collaboration provides an expansive range of services to the client community. He also shared a model that would enable the AIA to be involved in applied research through the PIAs in collaboration with other institutions and provide enhanced knowledge base products to the professional practice areas. At our Board meeting, it was reported that we are making good progress with our committees and our three-year plan for realignment with the Michigan Architectural Foundation programs. We started this year with several initiatives from the planning retreat in January.  Our first priority in Public Affairs was to take a more proactive stance in the public realm on issues affecting the quality of life in our communities. Last year our media subcommittee was involved with building chapter liaisons to help members get more involved in media relations. After some training and facilitating by our consultant Marx Lane, we have seen a stronger presence in the media with articles, feature stories, guest interviews and editorials. Architects are speaking out around the state.

On a somewhat quieter note our pilot K-5 curriculum program was launched. It is now ready to be leveraged on the website statewide.

Our priority in Government Affairs was to revise the language in school construction law regarding responsibility in construction. We have made progress in getting our issues known and we are currently pursuing language revisions through a Senate committee. AIAMI lobbyist Dennis Cawthorne reported at the Business Meeting that he believes our Legislative Day was a huge success and strengthened our presence in Lansing. This year it included an exhibit in the Capitol, discussion of issues with state legislators in the afternoon, and the "Howling" reception in the evening. AIAMI Vice President Tim Casai is co-chairing a special task force to look at a three-year realignment of the AIAMI and MAF programs and services to be more consistent with the mission of each organization in the future for the mutual interest and benefit of both organizations. He suggested reviewing refinancing of the loan with MAF to provide more immediate payoff of the balance and reduce costs to AIAMI. The Board approved that steps be taken to investigate refinancing. Subsequent tasks include restructuring a services agreement with MAF and most importantly an evaluation and realignment of programs between the two organizations.       In other official business, we elected Tom Mathison AIA as Regional Director for Michigan. Tom and our new National Vice President Gene Hopkins FAIA, give Michigan two representative and highly skilled voices on the National Board next year. Congratulations to both of them. I urge you to join me in supporting their efforts in 2002.
