1. Three Michigan Architects Named Fellows
Congratulations to Michigan architects John T. Meyer, Lorri D. Sipes and Ilene R. Tyler. They are among 72 architects elevated by AIA to its prestigious College of Fellows. This honor is awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. The new Fellows, who are entitled to use the designation FAIA following their names, were invested in the College of Fellows on May 18 at the 2001 AIA National Convention and Expo in Denver. All three Michigan Fellows are leaders in the preservation field. Meyer is with Wigen Tincknell and Meyer, Saginaw. Sipes was a co-founder of Architects Four, Inc., which merged with SmithGroup where she is now the director of historic preservation. Tyler is a partner and director of preservation at Quinn Evans Architects of Ann Arbor.
2. Michigan's Gene Hopkins, FAIA, Elected AIA Vice President
Eugene Hopkins, FAIA, was elected vice president of the AIA at the recent AIA National Convention. A past president of AIA-Huron Valley, Hopkins is a partner of SmithGroup, Inc. He has also served as president of AIA Michigan, as an AIA Regional Director and as PIA Executive Committee Chair.
3. AIA Delegates Vote on Dues Assessment and Education Standards
A resolution approved by delegates at the AIA Convention will support a multi-media advertising campaign through a member dues assessment. It is an extension of a current dues assessment, and will be $50 per year for a period of three years. A second initiative allowing architectural graduates to take a portion of the exam upon graduation also was passed by Convention delegates.
4. Golf Opportunities
AIA Michigan members are invited to the Masonry Institute of Michigan Annual Benefit Scholarship Golf Outing on June 7, 2001, at Dunham Hills. Proceeds benefit architectural students. Call Michelle Corrigan at MIM for details, (734) 458-8544. It's not too late to join in the fun with the Detroit Architectural Golf League, which plays each month through October at courses around Southeastern Michigan and Ontario. The next outing is June 25 at Paint Creek Country Club in Lake Orion. Call Ernie Hickson for details, (313) 235-9224.
5. Professional AIAM Staff Offers Member Support
Members occasionally ask about the role of staff members for AIA Michigan, AIA Detroit and Michigan Architectural Foundation. Our staff of 5.5 people has a combined total of more than 90 years experience. These staff members, who work out of the historic Beaubien House, are assisted by a Web consultant, newsletter editor, legislative counsel and public relations counsel. The staff supports the work of the boards and committees of all three organizations. Working closely with program planning committees is a key responsibility of our staff members. Along with members, they plan and execute numerous educational programs such as the Health Facilities and Educational Facilities conferences, code seminars, design retreat, technology conference, liability seminars, Leadership Conference and more. The staff also plays a critical role in the legislative arena, making sure Michigan architects are represented in Lansing and Washington through our Grassroots Conference, Legislative Day and Minuteman Program. All membership data is maintained by AIAM staff. The staff is also responsible for publication of the AIAM Bulletin, this electronic newsletter and Place magazine, as well as promoting the profession through news releases to the media throughout the year. AIAM staff members are easily reached via phone at (313) 965-4100, or by e-mail at aiami@aiami.com.
6. Green Buildings Seminar
Johnson Controls and AIA Detroit sponsor "Buildings for a Livable Future" on June 27, 2001, in Livonia. The program includes a half-day of presentations, followed by lunch and an optional tour of the EPA Regional Office highlighting Green Design. Topics will cover Greening the Building Industry: An Overview of USGBC and LEED; Integrated Design and Integrated Teams; Integrated Systems and Solutions; Economics of Building Green and Heart of America Green Builder Program. Attendance is by invitation, which are being sent to AIA members and others in early June. Cost of the seminar is $30. Call Michelle Miller at Johnson Controls at (248) 276-6332 for more information.
7. AIA Chicago Hosts Professional Development Seminar
AIA Chicago presents its fifth annual Professional Development Conference on June 1-2. Friday will feature sessions in management, design and technical issues/life safety tracks. Michael Dell'Isola, PE, CVS, of Hanscomb Inc., will present a cost estimating seminar. Last year, Dell'Isola presented a very popular - and very condensed - session on this topic. He has been asked back to present a full day program. For details, visit www.aiachicago.org for an on-line brochure and registration, or call (312) 670-7770.
8. UofM Museum of Art Features Albert Kahn
A gala celebration on June 9 at the UofM Museum of Art commemorates the openings of Albert Kahn: Inspiration for the Modern, highlighting Kahn's broad influence on modernism in architecture and the visual arts, and In Human Touch: Photographs by Ernestine Ruben. Ruben, Kahn's granddaughter, is an internationally celebrated photographer and UM alumna whose transforming images usher Kahn's tradition of innovation into the twenty-first century. Funds raised by the gala will support the Museum's education and exhibit programs. For details, contact Julie Maturen, (734) 647-2064.
