Michigan Architectural Foundation

This Summary Report is intended to update the AIA Michigan Chapters of the current activities of the Michigan Architectural Foundation. Chapter Presidents and/or Vice Presidents are encouraged to share this information with your Chapter’s Board of Directors and Chapter membership.

ARCHITECTURAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES THREE AWARDS

Detroit, Michigan — April 20, 2007 — The Michigan Architectural Foundation Board of Directors approved two scholarships this year in their President’s Scholarship Program. Recipients are Brittany M. Guercio a senior at the University of Michigan and Brian E. Pelloski in his fourth year at the University of Detroit Mercy   Thanks to a grant that the Foundation earned from the American Institute of Architects Component Scholarship Program, the Foundation is able to award two $4,000 scholarships. The students will be recognized at the 150th Anniversary Gala of The American Institute of Architects Michigan at the Inn at St. John in Plymouth on April 20th.
 

The third award is the annual David Evans Memorial Grant for Historic Preservation. This is the sixth $5,000 grant, jointly awarded by MAF and the Clannad Foundation, and it will go to the The Chippewa County Historical Society in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Specifically, the grant will be used to restoring the roof on the News Building, the new home of the Chippewa County Historical Society.

 

 
COMERICA DONATES GENEROUSLY TO Great Architecture of Michigan Book
GREAT ARCHITECTURE OF MICHIGAN BOOK

Carl Roehling, FAIA, receiving a check for $33,000 from Brenda Schneider, Hon. AFF. AIA Detroit and Tom Ogden, both from Comerica, for the 'Great Architecture of Michigan' book with photos by Korab to be published this in the fall of 2008.

   
CONTINUING EDUCATION / NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
Over 600 architects, contactors and building owners took advantage of this year’s Health Facilities and Educational Facilities Conferences sponsored by the Michigan Architectural Foundation.  Both events (Health in the Spring and Education in the Fall) allowed the attendees to participate in presentations on the latest developments in both of these fields of practice.  Watch for the upcoming Health Facilities Conference scheduled for March 8-9, to be held in Grand Rapids. 

2008 Health Facilities and Educational Facilities will be operated by AIA Michigan.

PUBLICATIONS

Detroit Architecture -
The “AIA Guidebook to Detroit“, a publication supported by the MAF, documents the architecture of Detroit through photographs, written descriptions and maps and is an excellent resource for self-guided tours of the city.  Compiled by Eric Hill, FAIA and John Gallagher, architectural writer for the Detroit Free Press, the 350-page soft cover book is available through the AIA Michigan office

American City - Detroit Architecture 1845-2005” is a recently issued large format book representing the architecture of Detroit, the first such book in over thirty years.  Sponsored in part through a grant from the MAF, American City “showcases a Detroit that will surprise many and bring long-overdue attention to the city‘s heritage of fine design“.  The book is available at local bookstores.
